Equality – will we always find something to discriminate against?

Equality. Everybody having the same access to the same opportunities, without fear of discrimination or abuse. Is this ever really possible?

The more we seem to progress as a society and improve the more differences we find, more opportunities for discrimination and inequality.

he reason I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately is because I’ve been seeing a lot of news which is strongly demonising vegans and then in retaliation vegans against non-vegans. None of this is ok. We are all different and we may not have the same beliefs or feelings as each other but that does not mean we cannot treat each other with respect and humanity and speak to each other courteously. I will never fully understand why people listen to and enjoy ‘garage’ music but would happily have a conversation with someone who does and listen to why they feel the way they do and would appreciate if they gave me the same respect to state my case in opposition. This does not mean one of us is right and one of us is wrong. We are both right and both wrong, or maybe neither of us is right nor wrong. I understand this example simplifies the case and it is not that simple; but it does stem from the same idea – two people not seeing the same way.

It would be a lot easier for progress to be made if pejorative language wasn’t used to readily. The media loves to over exaggerate good and bad, nothing can be in between yet everything is really. I don’t see there are being 2 options in most cases there are so many shades of grey in between.

We can all find differences but why can’t we find similarities so easily.

I think it would be safe to say most people want to help the planet, most people don’t want animals to suffer, most people want be healthier. We can all agree on these points. We just have different perspectives and priorities on how to get there; these are influenced by so many aspects. That is ok.

Different example – I’d like to think most people think you should be able to be a stay at home parent regardless of gender, most people think pay should be determined on skills and job role, most people think you should not be shouted at on the street. Yet gender inequality still exists.

We are moving forward but just as we find a bit more similarity with others, we find something else which separates us. The media is not going to change, we need to change the way we process the media and strip back to bias.

Change doesn’t come from aggression, hate, negativity; change comes through finding common ground and working together towards shared priorities where everyone feels respected and heard. Living from a place of love, kindness, compassion and respect for one another.

As quite often in my blogs, this is just a thought-piece, ramblings from my mind that I’m trying to make sense of. This post is not meant in any way to offend anyone but just to provide a topic to think more on. I’d love to hear if you have any thoughts on this – but please only in a way which is conducive to discussion and not with any anger.
