Post-Holiday Blues

I recently went on a little mini break to the Cotswolds in England, not far from where I live in London but just far enough away to get out of all the hustle and bustle! I had such a wonderful time with my partner exploring the beauty of the English countryside and enjoying some yummy food and drink. When we got back I found myself feeling really low. I often get this after being away somewhere for a while. When you come back from being somewhere new and exciting and find yourself back to the same old routine – otherwise known as the ‘post-holiday blues’.

Over the years having been lucky enough to go on a lot of holidays I have come up with a few ways of combating this sadness you can feel when returning from a wonderful break away. So, without further ado, here are my top tips to beat the post-holiday blues:

  1. Plan your next holiday – probably my favourite way to get out of that funk! Focusing on your next trip away helps keep you in that positive mindset. It doesn’t have to be a holiday, it can be anything – a gig, a day trip, etc.
  2. Start a project – similarly, this takes your mind off the past and brings you firmly into the present and future giving you something to do and look forward to. My favourite things are starting a new knitting project, testing a new recipe or reorganising a room!
  3. Write about your trip – journal, write a blog, a travel guide, share on social media…whatever you want; just take time to relive the trip, remember what was great and what you enjoyed or didn’t and let yourself stay immersed in the trip for a little longer. I find this little transition does help to make that sudden end of a holiday a little less dramatic!
  4. Make time for self-care – on holiday we often over-indulge and sometimes the low feeling we get after holiday can also be because of withdrawal from sugar and can be your body rebelling from all the food and drink. Giving your body lots of veggies, steering clear of alcohol, sleeping well, drinking lots of water, getting out in the sun – all of these things can help you feel a lot better.
