My Week at Uni – Breakdown

After the rollercoaster of emotions which was the previous week, I was really hopeful that I would feel more settled. I could not have been more wrong. I felt pretty low all weekend put couldn’t put my finger on why. It all culminated in a bit of an emotional breakdown on Monday. I realised I was feeling a bit worthless; the difficulty of the exam the week before had thrown me and magnified so many other aspects of my life. I have always been quite academic and assumed this year would be a lot easier for me than it has been (great ego check!) I have also been trying to start my own business along side that. I finally realised this was getting too much and that I was saying yes to things to help others which did not serve me or necessarily make me happy.

After this realisation I pulled myself together and went to teach a corporate yoga class which was wonderful. They were a lovely group of people and it was a really fun class. Restoring my faith in myself and what I want to be spending my time doing.

So, I came up with a game plan. I know my goals and what I want to achieve in different areas of my life: personal, study, work. What I do now needs to be inline with these goals and if it isn’t, then maybe I don’t need to do it at all. I also need to remember not to do things for others sacrificing my own happiness and self-care.

After all the stress and emotion recently…I passed both of my exams. The biology exam which I felt went terribly actually went ok I got 60% with the pass rate of 50% so I underestimated my guessing skills (sorry, I mean knowledge!!) This is a new subject for me and I need to allow time to adjust! For now…yay, I passed my first 2 exams =]

Personal learning from this week: Some times things have to get worse before they get better and practice the self-care you preach!

Interesting things I’ve learnt this week:

  1. Toxicity of toothpaste – Our mouths are extremely absorbent and are a way to quickly get substances into the bloodstream. Commonly used toothpastes are often filled with toxic chemicals and substances which are not good for your health. Although we do not eat or drink toothpaste some of the chemicals are easily absorbed into our bodies. Fluoride can cause teeth to become brittle and discoloured as well as building up in the bodies tissues. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) is a synthetic detergent which can build up causing eye, heart and liver disease. Triclosan prevents gingivitis but can disrupt hormones in the body and cause endocrine disruption. There are often many other preservatives and artificial flavourings in most toothpastes.
  2. Are you deficient in vitamin B12? – Vitamin B12 is critical for healthy cell function, DNA synthesis and repair, and nerve function. Pretty important right? Many people are aware that those on a diet which does not include meat or animal products can be at risk of B12 deficiency but what people are not always aware of is that most people (even those consuming meat and animal products may be deficient in B12.) Absorbing vitamin B12 from animal products is a complex process for the body so regardless of diet it is a tricky vitamin to ensure we get enough of. Those with the best levels of B12 are usually those eating fortified cereals or taking B12 supplements. Something to be aware of is that many supplements are in the form of cyanocobalamin which is a man-made molecule which the body has trouble metabolising. The best supplements to look for are those containing: methylcobalamin and hydroxycobalamin.
