Starting a Home Yoga Practice

An area people often seem to struggle with is starting a consistent home yoga practice. It’s not always easy to get to a class and even when it is, it can be pretty costly to got to multiple classes a week.

Here are my top 8 tips to help you start and keep a consistent home yoga practice:

  1. Environment – find a space to practice yoga. The ideal would be somewhere light and airy, with space to move around, maybe nice lighting and space for candles etc. In reality this kind of space is not something most of us have! All you really need is somewhere big enough for you and your mat. If there’s a cupboard or a wall close by that’s ok, maybe you can use if as a prop in your practice!!
  2. Routine – often we have a daily routine and habits – what we do when we get out of bed in the morning, what we do when we get home from work, what we do before bed, etc. Adding yoga into your daily routine can help to make it become something which just becomes part of your daily routine. For me: I get out of bed, make hot lemon water for myself and make my boyfriend a smoothie for breakfast. I sit and do my Italian language lesson and go through my social media whilst I drink my hot lemon. Then I roll out my yoga mat and centre myself. I sometimes do a HIIT workout or a core workout then I do yoga (sometimes my own flow, sometimes a YouTube video), then I meditate. This has become my morning routine. If you have an irregular schedule this is a little more difficult but you can create a weekly routine rather than daily or options for when you do different shift patterns.
  3. 30 day challenges – it’s been said that it takes 21 days to form a habit. You may have seen these before but there are quite a few 30 day yoga challenges out there, particularly on YouTube. These are a great way to make yoga a habit, something you naturally do every day. You will also notice quite a big progression in your practice if you practice every day for 30 days.
  4. Just roll out your mat and see what happens – on those days where you don’t feel like doing yoga just roll out your mat and see what happens. Trust me when I say that is the hardest part. Roll out the yoga mat and just sit down in the middle of it or stand at the top of it. Take a few breaths and give yourself space. Notice your breath and how your body feels, notice any areas of tension, move into those areas, move your body to make it feel better flowing with your breath. Before you know it, you’re doing yoga!
  5. Find inspiration – find a teacher or a style you like on YouTube or other platforms like Yogaia or oneOeight, watch flows on social media platforms. You don’t have to do it alone! If you are now to yoga or aren’t comfortable creating your own practices then don’t! You don’t need to there is a lot of wonderful yoga practices online which you can do live with teachers or watching recordings.
  6. Have a why – why do you want to do yoga? It is so much more powerful, so much easier keep up a consistent practice if you have a reason why. This way, if you have a day where you don’t feel like you want to do yoga, you can come back to your why and remind yourself why you wanted to do yoga in the first place.
  7. Make yourself accountable – tell a friend, a family member, your social media, anyone. Tell someone what you’re doing and why and ask them to check up on you. Another option is to meet up with someone to do yoga. We are often more likely to do things for others than we are for ourselves!
  8. Be kind to yourself – you are human, allow yourself space to be imperfect. If you don’t quite make your goal or your aim it’s ok. Recognise what you want to do differently next time and move on and do that the next time. Don’t beat yourself up if you missed a day, that’s ok, just get back on it the next day!

Just remember we all have to begin somewhere and wherever you are on your journey I’d love to hear about your experiences or any tips you might have.
